Protein Every Single Day: The One Thing You Can't Skip
I'm going to be straight with you. You can't get away with eating a bad diet. You have to eat a lot of protein and you have to eat a sufficient amount of food if you're going to build muscle. This is something you have to do every single day. It's not something you can do 50% of the time, 75% of the time.
Every single day.
Why Protein Is Non-Negotiable
Your muscles are constantly breaking down and rebuilding. Every time you train, you create micro-tears in your muscle fibers. Protein provides the amino acids your body needs to repair those fibers and build them back stronger. Without enough protein, your body can't do that job. You'll train hard and have nothing to show for it.
It's not just about muscle either. Protein keeps you full, stabilizes your blood sugar, and burns more calories during digestion than carbs or fat. It's doing work for you around the clock, but only if you're eating enough of it.
How Much You Need
For anyone training consistently, I recommend 0.8 to 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight. If you weigh 180 pounds, that's 144 to 180 grams per day. Every day. Training days and rest days.
What Happens When You Skip
I've seen it a hundred times. A client is crushing it in the gym, training four or five days a week, getting stronger. But they're not seeing the body composition changes they want. We look at their nutrition and it's the same story every time: protein is inconsistent. Good on Monday and Tuesday, falls off Wednesday, barely hits half their target on the weekend.
That inconsistency costs you. Muscle growth isn't a switch you flip on training days. It's a process that runs 24/7. If you're not feeding that process consistently, you're leaving results on the table.
The Weekend Problem
Weekends are where most people fall apart. The routine breaks, meals get skipped or replaced with whatever's convenient, and protein drops off a cliff. If you're serious about results, your weekend nutrition needs to look like your weekday nutrition. Not identical, but close.
Making It Practical
You don't need to eat chicken breast and broccoli six times a day. Here's how real people hit their protein:
- Breakfast: 3 eggs and Greek yogurt: 35+ grams before 8 AM
- Lunch: 6 oz chicken or ground turkey with whatever carbs and veggies you like: 35 to 40 grams
- Snack: Protein shake or a handful of jerky: 25 to 30 grams
- Dinner: Fish, steak, or another lean protein source: 35 to 40 grams
That's 130 to 145 grams without even trying hard. Add one more snack and you're at your target.
The Bottom Line
Your training split, your cardio, your supplements: all of it is secondary to this. If your protein isn't consistent, nothing else matters as much as it should. Get this right first. Do it every day. Then, with the rest of your nutrition dialed in through coaching, we can talk about optimizing everything else.
